Lessons learned from learning

Hello world, it’s been a hot minute!!! Since the last post where I wrote happily about the lack of academic stress, blissfully unaware that a month or so later I’d subject myself to more of the same, I hope you’ve been keeping well. To quickly catch you up, alongside balancing social and work life, a lot of time and energy has been dedicated to studying in the past few months. In doing so, I’ve learned a few lessons beyond the curriculum which I’m here to share.

Silver linings

Hey, in case you haven't heard there's this thing going around called the coronavirus. Yep, this is yet another post about it. NZ has declared a level four emergency which has resulted in a national wide lockdown for at least the next month. To think this all happened over the past week is wild.

Hello wonderful souls of the internet!  It's been a loooooong time since I've last published something on here and I'm going to cut out the bit where I say I'm going to try and post more frequently or consistently from now on. I can't promise that, and to be very honest there's a lot I wouldn't like to publicize. So, we'll see...

What Are The Chances?

As a statistics major, I spend a good chunk of my degree studying and thinking about probability and chances, and what example does my stats lecturer often like to use? You got it – dice rolling. I don’t know if it’s just me or that example makes me think of board games. You roll a dice and you perform an action. So, it reasonably follows, then, that the more you roll your dice the more you get to act. Maybe not every roll of the dice will lead to action you want or have to take, but that’s an opportunity there unfolding.  Doesn’t life resemble something similar? The more you roll your dice and put yourself out there, the more you’re going to get out of it. The more ‘turns’ you have, the greater your chances of success are. Lately, I’ve noticed that I have been putting myself forward to become a part of more extracurricular activities, more clubs and more things that seem exciting to me. I’ve had so many interviews for different things/roles and it's been truly stimulating! I ...

F=ma

If life was Newton’s second Law, then my life in the past week or so would have been when the acceleration was equal to zero. Not only that, it was probably stationary as opposed to having a constant motion, because that’ll imply that I’ve been making progress of some sort. I haven’t. I feel like I haven’t made a lot of progress lately, whether that’s in terms of self-development, academics, social interactions or otherwise. I’ve been meaning to do a lot of things, but it just hasn’t happened. There is no reason for why none of it is happening except for the fact that I can’t pull myself together to make it happen, and that frustrates me to no end. Why am I not doing what I know I should be doing? Why do I let myself stay stuck in this place? I felt like for a while I’ve been making great progress in different aspects of my life, but I can’t seem to keep the momentum going anymore. I don’t know what has happened, but I know this isn’t me. Sure, it’s very me-like to be lazy and procra...

Rejection

I think it’s safe to say that most of us have, in some point in our lives, encountered a letter (or email) that goes something like this... Thank you for your application for __. We regret to inform you that your application was unsuccessful – and then it goes on to say that there were a number of quality applications to mask the fact that yours were not one of them, sorry. But do apply again next round! I appreciate this email for the reason that they took the time to notify me of the outcome regardless. It’s better than not hearing anything and endlessly wondering whether I’ve made it or not. But it could be hard to come to terms with still. Rejection stings. I think it’s just the fact that you’ve been reminded that you were not good enough in one aspect or another. I’ve been working on applications for programs I wanted to be in and positions I wanted to take on. This whole process of applying, interviewing and finally, the rejection has taught me a few things. ...

How to adult 101

Hey pals, I hope you're all doing great and having a solid July so far! I'm aware I haven't posted a monthly update as usual for May or June but I could basically sum up the past few weeks in one word: exams. So yep, there you have it! But your girl's back and she's back for a good few weeks before the commencement of semester two! How crazy is it to think that one semester has already gone by? Although I still have many more semesters to get through before the completion of my degree, it feels surreal how quickly it's all happening. The past semester had been a good one though! Despite the workload and stress, I've learned a lot along the way. I genuinely have enjoyed myself whether it's focusing on uni work or otherwise. I've got some exciting things to look forward to and I can’t wait for all the adventure in store for the next 6 months! I am finally on inter-semester break (have been for a good week or so now) and I am really loving it. I...
